ここエルサレムの旧市街には、有名な場所がある。
「嘆きの壁」
よく映像として目にしていたので、知ってはいたけれど、
そこが一体どういう場所なのか、いまいち理解していなかった。
ユダヤ人の歴史は、エルサレムの歴史でもある。
前日の日記の追記でエルサレムの成り立ちを記したように、
長い年月の間、ユダヤ人は迫害され続け、ようやくかつての王国があったこの地を手に入れた。
そこが、聖地であるエルサレム。
嘆きの壁とは、以前(といっても紀元前20年まで遡る)、建てられたヘロデ神殿の外壁である。
現在この地は「神殿の丘」と呼ばれ、イスラム教の岩のドームが建てられている。
岩のドームは、この壁の向こう側のすぐ近くに聳え立っている。
ユダヤの嘆きの壁とイスラムの敷地がここまで近いとは思ってもいなかった。
神殿の丘は、イスラム教指導者による管理となっているため、
この敷地内でユダヤ人やキリスト教徒は宗教的な儀式を行うことを禁じられている。
そのため、ユダヤ人はその方角にあるかつての神殿の壁に「お祈り」をしているのだ。
「嘆いている」と言われているが、実際は敬虔なユダヤ教徒がこの壁に向かって、
神殿再建と救世主の来臨を祈っている。
ある旅行者が、「ユダヤ人が嘆く場所」と呼んだことで「嘆きの壁」と言われるようになったとか。
祈っている人々を見ていると、涙を流しながらいつまでも立ち尽くす人もいる。
心からこの地を取り戻したいと願っている人がいるんだなと思い知らされる。

I had often seen it in images, so I knew of it, but I had no idea what it was like.
I had often seen images of it, but I did not really understand what it was all about.
The history of the Jewish people is also the history of Jerusalem.

The Dome of the Rock rises just beyond this wall.
I had not expected the Jewish Wall of Lamentation and the Islamic site to be so close together.
The Temple Mount is under the control of Muslim leaders because
Jews and Christians are forbidden to hold religious ceremonies on this site.
Therefore, Jews “pray” to the wall of the former temple in that direction.
They are said to be “mourning,” but in reality, devout Jews are “praying” to this wall, praying for the rebuilding of the Temple and the coming of the Messiah.

A traveler called it “the place where Jews mourn,” and so it came to be called “the Wall of Sorrows.
I see people praying, some of them standing there forever with tears in their eyes.
I am reminded that there are people who sincerely wish to reclaim this place.
